OUR EYEBALL MONITOR A.K.A OPTOMETRIST
Known for his ridiculous shirts and quirky sense of humour, optometrist Dr David Welch is also a hugely skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate optometrist. His clinical skills and expertise have been gleaned from decades of experience providing eye care to wonderfully diverse communities across metropolitan and regional Australia. For many years he also kicked up the red dirt as a visiting optometrist for remote indigenous communities (through the Visiting Optometrist Scheme), consulted at the Royal Society for the Blind and provided eye care for refugees and asylum seekers at the Refugee Health Service.
As a lover of his profession and with a big heart, David loves to give back: he has provided free eye care in Mongolia (Rotary Eye Camps), and contributed to the strategic direction of his professional association (Optometry Australia) as a Board member in WA, SA and nationally. He is currently a consulting skills assessor at Flinders University School of Optometry and has mentored students on clinical placements for many years. Never one to be left behind, you’ll often find him glued to a webinar, or lapping up the latest evidence-based clinical knowledge from around the optometry world.
Oh and David says it’s essential that we inform you that he’s a Virgo and enjoys long walks on the beach.
